Sources for Rare or Cool Plants

Annie's Annuals

https://www.anniesannuals.com/

Annuals and Perennials.  A long time local favorite of northern California gardeners.  They are based in Richmond and if you are ever near them it is worth a visit.  They supply numerous nurseries in the greater Bay area far enough south to hit Santa Cruz and Monterrey Bay.  And of course now online too. Plants are all in four inch square pots so the more usual annuals are not small little starts that struggle past transplanting, these are well grown larger plant.  Plus lots of rarities.  You can create a wishlist and have it mail you regular if you find you are not spending enough of you money on plants on a weekly basis :-).

Kartuz

I first found this one when I was obsessed with Begonias and Iochroma, which I am still breading off some of the starts I got here.  Many rare and usual plants found here.  Some of the rarer can take some time to get, but definitely worth it if you have to have the rare stuff.

Plant Delights

Many rare, unusual plants with an eye to having cold hardy varieties that can take some frost.  Very helpful to those of us that can get away with growing almost anything but are far enough north to have bad frosts every couple years.

Succulent Gardens

This one is more of a retial nursery provider than online seller, though they have succulent wreath and wall planting stuff and mass cuttings for those online.  Another source I recommend not just cause they have a very large variety, but for doing some really great little things.  Like for instance listing hardiness on all the plant tags (or well the ones for which hardiness is known).  Here in central California we see some occasional freezes and well it is getting just to expensive to heat my little greenhouse anymore (or well that is sort of a lie its the begonias that took the greenhouse over).  I have made quite a collection of succulents that are tolerant of 25-32F and as long as I keep them from being eternally soggy in our winter rains they all just sail right through winter with no added heat right outdoors (again water will still get them so I keep them under overhangs and porches on raining weeks). This source is also great for including flower color, hybrid and cross names on tags, way more detail than many others, and some pretty nice rarities too.  You can their stuff around Monterrey and Santa Cruz (Garden Company) retail stores or check their site for location and hours and go to the source.
